Flights of fancy with How To Train Your Dragon 2

Absolutely one of the most magnanimous and breath taking animated movies ever created. I went into Dragon 2 hoping for it to be at least on par with the first one, which I saw in theaters with my son in 3D a few years back. As a matter of fact, we had just left Toys R Us right before seeing Dragon 1 and my son took his new toys in with him. I remember him fiddling with them until about 10 minutes into the movie and the next thing I know, there’s 5 plastic sharks sitting in the cup holder next to me. We both enjoyed it immensely and when I heard they were making a second one, I was a little worried.

Well folks, worry not. Dragon 2 is not only better, it’s twice as beautiful, twice as funny, twice as emotional (honestly, my eyes swelled a bit… Ahem!) and the action sequences and dancing through the clouds?… Oh, what a treat. I’m in awe of what they’ve done here. I applaud the story, direction and acting in this film. Kudos to all around. I’ve also never seen such creativity when it comes to the designing and personality creation of dragons. Watch the dragons closely as they mimic pets in our day to day lives. Clearly the animators are pet lovers in one way or another. They clearly enjoy coming back to this world and continuing the saga to its new exhilarating heights. The dragons are marvelous and I want one of my very own. This will be in my DVD collection, right next to Frozen, all the Toy Story’s and my Anime classics. Definitely my favorite animated film of the year thus far and it will be a tough one to beat. I want to keep this review brief, because if I keep writing, I may say too much. And much is to be said about this film. All the lead characters were great in their roles here including Jay Baruchel, Cate Blanchet, Gerald Butler, America Ferrera, Johah Hill, Djimon Hounsou, Kit Harrington and more.

All I can say is stop reading my review if you haven’t seen the movie, grab a ticket and enjoy the show. It’s worth every cent. I saw it in 2D on Father’s Day while out of town at a smaller theater that doesn’t incorporate 3D as of yet, but I highly recommend spending the extra if you can afford it and watching it in 3D. I’m going back when I get home to do just that.

I wanted to rate this movie a 10 out of 10 stars but there was one moment that threw me for a bit and it’s minor but it still bothered me. And with that in mind I have to give it a 9 1/2 stars out of 10. Maybe you’ll come to the same conclusion once you’ve seen the moment to which I refer.
