Flights of fancy with How To Train Your Dragon 2

Absolutely one of the most magnanimous and breath taking animated movies ever created. I went into Dragon 2 hoping for it to be at least on par with the first one, which I saw in theaters with my son in 3D a few years back. As a matter of fact, we had just left Toys R Us right before seeing Dragon 1 and my son took his new toys in with him. I remember him fiddling with them until about 10 minutes into the movie and the next thing I know, there’s 5 plastic sharks sitting in the cup holder next to me. We both enjoyed it immensely and when I heard they were making a second one, I was a little worried.

Well folks, worry not. Dragon 2 is not only better, it’s twice as beautiful, twice as funny, twice as emotional (honestly, my eyes swelled a bit… Ahem!) and the action sequences and dancing through the clouds?… Oh, what a treat. I’m in awe of what they’ve done here. I applaud the story, direction and acting in this film. Kudos to all around. I’ve also never seen such creativity when it comes to the designing and personality creation of dragons. Watch the dragons closely as they mimic pets in our day to day lives. Clearly the animators are pet lovers in one way or another. They clearly enjoy coming back to this world and continuing the saga to its new exhilarating heights. The dragons are marvelous and I want one of my very own. This will be in my DVD collection, right next to Frozen, all the Toy Story’s and my Anime classics. Definitely my favorite animated film of the year thus far and it will be a tough one to beat. I want to keep this review brief, because if I keep writing, I may say too much. And much is to be said about this film. All the lead characters were great in their roles here including Jay Baruchel, Cate Blanchet, Gerald Butler, America Ferrera, Johah Hill, Djimon Hounsou, Kit Harrington and more.

All I can say is stop reading my review if you haven’t seen the movie, grab a ticket and enjoy the show. It’s worth every cent. I saw it in 2D on Father’s Day while out of town at a smaller theater that doesn’t incorporate 3D as of yet, but I highly recommend spending the extra if you can afford it and watching it in 3D. I’m going back when I get home to do just that.

I wanted to rate this movie a 10 out of 10 stars but there was one moment that threw me for a bit and it’s minor but it still bothered me. And with that in mind I have to give it a 9 1/2 stars out of 10. Maybe you’ll come to the same conclusion once you’ve seen the moment to which I refer.

Also, don’t forget to check out our new App version. MoJoBac XS Movie Club will be live next month and members will be able to purchase movie tickets for $6 per ticket. AppStore and Google
Play will host the App. Until next time, ciao!

How many X-Men does it take to screw in a light bulb?

Apparently it takes about a good 20 or so X-Men and all their amazing friends to screw in one light bulb or better yet, execute on one idea to make the world a better place. I’d take those numbers any day.

First off, this review will be completely spoiler free. I hate it when others spoil movie plots and scenes for me before I can view them, so I typically make it to the earliest showtimes possible to avoid that from happening.

It’s Memorial Day weekend and Fox just released its 7th X-Men franchised film (purchased from Marvel back before they started their own studio and cinematic universe), and the title is one I’ve been excited for since it’s first announcement. X-Men: Days of Future Past is based somewhat on the story arc released by Marvel Comics back in 1997 that spanned across 50-51 issues of assorted books. Books including Age of Apocalypse, X-Men Alpha, Generation Next, Astonishing X-Men, Blink and a few others I’m not thinking of right now. Now the book version of the story line differs a lot from the movie, so if you haven’t seen the movie by now, then your knowledge of the books story arcs won’t ruin anything for you.

Typically before I sit down and write my opinion on comic book movies, I usually get in some much needed screen time. I like to give it a couple of viewings so I can take in what I’ve experienced with a proper pov and not rush to opinions to quickly. In this case, I’ve seen X-Men:DOFP (3) times and by George, it’s gets better and better as I continue to notice things I missed the first few times around. This is coming from someone who also grew up reading X-Men, X-Force, X-Factor and so on and have been a fan of the movies since Bryan Singers intro in 2000 with the first X-Men movie. X-2 and First Class were definitely my favorites before this latest iteration, which in my opinion combined everything I loved about the two previous mentioned X titles. Not only is DOFP a total geek fest but it’s just a great movie with spectacular people born with extraordinary abilities and their fight to save not just their lively hood, but that of us normal humans as well.

The acting in this movie and the emotions captured by James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender playing the younger roles of Professor X and Magneto is magnificent. I felt every line and delivery and there wasn’t more I could ask for. Especially from James and you’ll see what I mean if you haven’t seen it by the time you finish reading this. My favorite scene in any comic book movie has always been by Night Crawler (what an awesome name) in X-2: X-Men United in the opening 5-10 minutes. Using his teleportation to try and take out the President of the United States. That title has recently been taken by none other than Quicksilver, played by Evan Peters, another version of a character directed by Bryan Singer. Without saying too much, this scene alone is worth the price of admission. Nuff’ Said. The way the story carries itself breathlessly from future to past and back and forth is an accomplishment for the director and cinematographer. Plus it handles like and action drama in the best of sense. It’s not cheesy like The Amazing Spiderman 2 tended to be at times. It was serious when it needed to be and humorous when it needed to be. A well mixed cocktail of writing and editing. The CGI was used to enhance the story when practical effects couldn’t do it. Not one moment was wasted on screen and that’s a hard feat to accomplish. A BIG BRAVO goes out to Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique who embodied what we love about the character in the first 3 X-Men installments. Timing, execution, acrobatics and all, I was thoroughly impressed after her meager performance in X-Men: First Class. Hugh Jackman as Wolverine may have been a front man once again, but he was well used and needed for this particular task at hand. Dead Lord that man is in great shape. Usually after watching a movie like this, you start to act like you have powers yourself as you converse with friends. In my case, I went home and pulled the chin up bar out of the closest and put in a couple of reps. Thanks Jackman for the motivation (if you ever read this).

Peter Dinklage and his Sentinels. Wow, what a villain. Those future sentinels are scary as hell and I wouldn’t want to be a mutant in the future. What a brilliant take on a bad guy that has been written and read over the many years of the X-Men comics existence. I was impressed and looking for a diaper as I crapped my pants at the same time. I loved that everyone achieved some kind of decent screen time, even though a couple could work on their acting, it was still good to see them in action. I’ve always been a fan of Sunspot and Bishop in the comics, so seeing them on screen was just too cool, even though I wanted more from them.

Fan Service was at an all time high in this film as well. You’ll want to go back a few times yourself to catch all the goodies.

This to me this is the best of the X-Men franchise so far and I don’t even think it would have been any better had Marvel released it underneath their own studio moniker like the Avengers, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk and more. I just don’t think it would have mattered as long as Simon Kinsberg was on the script and Bryan Singer was in the directors chair.

With this being my second movie review and my forte being in comic books from DC to Marvel, Image and some Dark Horse as well as others, them I will stick to what I know best. And that’s comic books adapted into movies. I also prefer to give film ratings in forms of 1-10 stars and you can take my opinion with a grain of salt, like I said, it’s my opinion. I give X-Men: DOFP a high scoring 10. And that’s a rare thing. I gave Captain America: The Winter Soldier the respect of beating out The Avengers. Now I’m not saying that DOFP is perfect by no means and I still prefer the Dark Knight as my favorite Comic Book Movie, but it’s definitely in my top 5 and maybe even top 3. Time will tell after my 5th and 6th viewings.

By the way, stay all the way until the very end of the credits. I will give it some time and I will wright my review on possibly the most exciting thing to come as far as additional scenes go in CBM’s these days.

The best way to get Discount Movie Tickets

20140509-082210.jpg

First of all, we all know how expensive it can be to go to the movies. By the time it’s all said and done, even after a single ticket purchase, and popcorn and soda to help enhance the experience, you walk out paying somewhere in the vicinity of $25. FOR A SINGLE PERSON. Let’s not talk about date prices because they’re darn near double.

Now there are different ways of getting discount tickets besides going to the movies on certain days or during matinee times that the theaters set aside (basically when no one goes). There’s online places like Craigslist, eBay and iOffer but your either bidding and waiting for an auction to end or being cheated by some shyster. There are businesses out there that buy tickets for their employees as an incentive program and some even allow you to buy through them. But these companies are few and far between and if you’re not an employee or know someone who is, then you’re s#!¥ outta luck like the rest of us. There’s also Dealflicks which is free to download but they have limited reach. Their discount theaters are smaller ones and their nearest location to us is over 300 miles away. We here at MoJoBac are providing a solution for this dilemma.

MoJoBac has decided to start our own MOBILE MOVIE CLUB. A movie club with access to the largest theaters such as AMC, Carmike, Cinemark and Regal theaters. What’s a Mobile Movie Club or MMC you ask? It’s a mobile App that smartphone/tablet users can download for a one time fee (preferably $9.99) that makes them a lifetime member with access to discount movie tickets up to 30% off (typically about $3 saved per ticket). And it doesn’t stop there. We will implement combo deals for tickets and concession and hopefully IMAX tickets as well. There will be contest for free tickets and Showtimes, reviews, trailers, photos and more. Not only will you not have to haggle with auctions anymore, but you can purchase anywhere from 1-5 tickets at a time saving you 15 bucks of the back. And you can do this anytime you like or need.

How it works and why we will be able to do this. The big boy box office theaters all offer discount tickets if you buy them in bulk. The majority make you purchase 50 or more and in increments of 10 thereafter. Carmike makes you start with 100 and in increments of 10 after that. We will purchase all the tickets in advance and give only our members access to buy them at those discounted prices.

Now our App is in place and after some restructuring, we are now in the works to obtain the necessary funds to stock inventory. We have launched a crowd funding campaign on Indiegogo.com. Crowd funding allows any individual to contribute funds to a project or campaign and in return receive rewards or perks for doing so. For our campaign, we are allowing anyone who contributes $1 or more, to have access to download the MoJoBac XS App for FREE and become a lifetime member. This is because if the campaign is a success, it’s because of individuals like yourself that it is so. We are campaigning for $4,500 and that will allow us to purchase the tickets in bulk from all (4) major theaters (which also cover over 1600 locations). When the campaign ends on June 7th 2014, we will make the purchases and give our contributors the links to download the Apps for Android and Apple mobile products for free. Anyone outside the campaign will have to pay the full download/membership price of $9.99.
Here’s a link to our Indiegogo campaign. Going here and contributing using paypal or credit card (all secure), will get you access to discount movie tickets when we launch in June.

Thank you for reading and for those who contribute and we’ll see you at the movies.

The Epic-ness of Captain America: The Winter Soldier

As always when I go into a movie, I try to go in unbiased and not try to based my opinions of the movie from what I’ve seen in the trailers I’m overloaded with before the movies debut. With Captain America TWS, I did just that. And boy oh boy was I treated with stimulating visuals, awesome story line, character development, great battle scenes and a step up on choreography against even the best of the best brawler movies such as The Born Identity series and others.

I’m a no spoilers kind of critic because I like to let people get their own fresh experience on the viewing without influence from outside parties. So needless to say, this review will contain no such thing as a spoiler (references to an experience that will take away and/or steal the over all feel of a first timers experience).

The sheer epic-ness that awaits you if you have not seen the movie brought to you by the Russo brothers will give you an emotional connection that none of the other Marvel films, even the Avengers, have been able to attain. I felt even the transitioning in and out of every situation moved along smoothly. The movie never left me feeling like I needed more even though I would have gladly taken more.

Chris Evans and the rest of the cast have graciously moved into their characters with great vigor with help from the formula of the screenplay. The directors really show off Cap’s power in this film and you feel it. Much kudos for the choice of Anthony Mackie in the role of Sam Wilson aka Falcon. A much needed counterpart for ole Cap to have on his side with welcome and subtle humor. Not over the top and just right for the environment. Scarlett Johansson’s role as a S.H.E.I.LD. Agent and Cap’s friend has turned into something of a bitter and sweet kinship that’s often hard to pull off on screen. Performances are performances, but relationships outside of what’s happening on camera is definitely showing up on screen here. They’ve been friends for quite some time since 2004’s The Perfect Score and I appreciate the level of intrigue the script allowed to have the Black Widows character earn Cap’s trust throughout the process of the movie. Samuel’s character Nick Fury had more to do this round as far as action goes and it’s a welcomed surprise and a highlight of the movie.

Let’s get down to the villain and how he kept me on edge. Not only was The Winter Soldier a match for Cap as far as brawling, military tactics and sure pleasure of badassness, but I loved the style in which his character keeps coming until the job is done. He never lets up and as an experience fighter back in my days who when on the attack, never lets up, I appreciated the rawness of it all.

I want to keep this review shorter than my adrenaline level and leave you with this. I think CATWS is better than the Avengers and maybe better than the Dark Knight. Maybe. I did catch an early screening of the movie and watched it again opening night. Then once again this past Sunday before I came to those conclusions. I’m very movie centric and weigh even my words carefully before print. Either way, no matter how you look at it. The fact that Captain America: The Winter Soldier is even in conversations as to what comic book movie is the best including it along with The Avengers and The Dark Knight speaks well in its favor. I would also like to give a huge thanks to Kevin Fiege and the direction he’s gone with the MCU. I’m a fan for life.

Gigaom

So you got yourself a Chromecast, either as an early holiday gift, or you just bought it for yourself. You unpacked it, installed it, watched a bit of Netflix (S NFLX) or YouTube, (S GOOG) and now you are wondering: What else can I do with this?

A lot, actually. Chromecast offers access to media through a growing list of apps (14 at the time of writing), and there are a whole bunch of neat ways to get additional functionality out of the device. We’ve compiled ten of the best Chromecast tips and tricks below:

New Look for MoJo App

Bac with the App with Paybac and a cleaner less clogged interface.
We tore down the walls and rebuilt most of the app. We left a few things intact but for the most part, we’ve gotten great reviews over the cleanliness of the app. Not as bogged down by image uploads like other image apps and ours gets straight to the meat and potatoes of what we built the app for in the first place. To pay our audience for uploading their photos with us and sharing. Plain and simple, simple and plain. Who wouldn’t want to get paid for doing what they were already doing for free anyhow?
The Black Hills has never looked so classy.
